Halloween and Fair Play

It seems to be universal that our Brownies love crafts! Evelyn provided the materials and inspiration for cute, character pumpkins. The girls dove into this one and we watched that wonderful kid concentration mixed with smiles!

Debbie Koobrick is the organizing force behind most of the fundraising for our service unit and she recently became ill and was hospitalized. The girls put their best efforts into making get well cards for Debbie.

The Brownies are working toward earning a "Fair Play" patch. This patch is all about the importance of following the rules, being part of a team, giving everyone a chance to participate and have the most fun possible! Have you ever tried to get out of a human knot? The Brownies worked together to get it done!

Learning About Community

Our first brownie meeting brought us 11 new surprises! Welcome Cecily, Gabriella, Anna, Madison, Kacey, Ava, Callie, Kirsten, Dylan, Gabby and Percy! Welcome back Ella, Maeve, Michelle, Madison, Laura, Charly, and Alani. We also welcome new leaders Lisa Dent, Evelyn Weissman and Karen Burney.

 

We used our first meeting to introduce our new brownies to some of the basics like the girl scout motto which is "Be Prepared" and the Girl Scout Slogan which is "Do a good turn daily." Girls received their books, vests and initial patches.

We practiced the Girl Scout Sign and Handshake and began practicing the Promise and Law. The girls shared about what activities and goals they were looking forward to. Camping and cookies were very popular!

 

 In our second meeting, Lisa Dent helped us explore the different ways we celebrate community. We identified different communities we know like AFS and our Troop. The girls were asked to come up with a symbol for their Troop and one for themselves. All the girls unanimously chose the beautiful AFS Oak Tree as our troop symbol. We also chose a song to represent our troop. Many ideas were thrown out like Happy Birthday, some Taylor Swift songs and we finally settle on "Tis a Gift to be Simple."

Here are some of the memories of that meeting. 

The girls designed and worked on a banner for our final march and celebration. The banner was filled with drawings of trees, flowers, friends and animals. The girls marched in a line singing and holding their banner. We finished with our brownie circle and said goodbye until the next meeting. Oh and did I mention how well mannered our Brownies were? We were very proud of them!
